Professor Roger Giner-Sorolla, of the University's School of Psychology, presented his lecture, titled Moral Emotions and Moral Research, in Keynes College at the University's Canterbury campus on 10th April 2014. Professor Giner-Sorolla's research interests include emotions and moral judgment, emotion and self-control, and inter-group emotions. He said: 'My research to date has focused on emotions often judged as negative - anger, disgust, shame and guilt - in an attempt to understand the positive things that these unpleasant feelings do for us and for society. But more recently, morality and research have crossed paths for me in a different way, as my writing and professional endeavours have encouraged recent efforts to improve the honesty and transparency of research reporting in psychology. 'This talk will highlight the points of connection between the two enterprises: the importance of studying strong and meaningful phenomena to encourage straightforward reporting of results, and the importance of scientists' own emotions in supporting and resisting change to the way they conduct research.'
